FIFA Fan Award Goes To Liverpool & Dortmund

Category : Uncategorized

The first ever FIFA fan award has been won by Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool supporters. Their joint rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone, sung before their Europa League clash last season, beat off competition from the Iceland supporters in Euro 2016, and fans of ADO Den Haag.

The shortlist was initially compiled by a FIFA panel, which consisted of Zvonimir Boban, Marta, Gabriel Batistuta and Vladimir Petkovic. Fans then voted in an online poll to select the winner.

Despite a strong challenge from the Iceland fans, whose slow clap has caught on with other supporters worldwide, the majority internet football bookmakers had made the Liverpool an Dortmund entry the overwhelming favorite to win the award.

The 27th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster was the day after the match, making the rendition especially moving. It was certainly a worthy winner of this new award, and will be a hard act to follow.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who has of course managed both clubs, said: “The LFC and BVB families should be very proud.”

He’s right. See for yourself.

Who do you think should be nominated for the Fans Award shortlist next year? Let us know your suggestions.

Malta U21 Players Cleared Of Match Fixing

Category : Uncategorized

Two Malta Under-21 players have been acquitted of match-fixing charges related to a game against Montenegro played last March, as reported in the Times Of Malta.

Malta, who are in England’s world cup qualifying group, cleared the two players of all charges in a court hearing in August. Ronnie Mackay, a Maltese resident, was also charged with involvement in the scandal, and is currently entering a plea bargain.

Malta is home to many of Europe’s 10 biggest internet betting companies, which are regulated by their local gaming authority. The Maltese government will be keen to avoid any further scandal, as the nation’s economy relies heavily on the revenue generated by these bookmakers. Bad publicity could deter future betting firms from locating to Malta, which competes with Gibraltar to try and attract bookmakers to do business there.

This is the first time Maltese football has been implicated in any betting scandal. The government and Maltese FA have thus far done a very good job of regulating their players. This seems like a one off, but if you are considering betting on the Maltese league you should be wary of any odds that seem to be unusual or out of sync with other companies.
